Every year, on the first Saturday in May, Vault of Midnight takes part in Free Comic Book Day. This is a nationwide event in which free comic books rain down from the heavens into the hands of THOUSANDS of eagerly awaiting fans and unsuspecting bystanders alike. The goal of the event is to spread the word about comic books and to share with the curious (but uninitiated) an approachable, inexpensive way to get introduced to what the medium has to offer. 

DETROIT

No "frills" here, folks. Vault of Midnight Detroit's first FCBD will be a testament to the form; the platonic, elegant ideal of what the day is and should be. Visit and get some free comics. That is all. If by "all" you mean "more than any of us could ever want or deserve." PLUS you get to pick those free comics up in a fresh, meticulously manicured retail venue that was seemingly crafted specifically for you. 

ANN ARBOR

Ann Arbor loves Free Comic Book Day. Every year comic book fans from all over South Eastern Michigan travel to Ann Arbor on a sacred yearly pilgrimage of nerdy enlightenment. This year travelers can expect even more amazing cosplay, trivia, high-fives, and FREE comics than ever before. The Vault staff will be opening the doors to the ever sought-after Sales Grotto with it's treasures aplenty, and will be constructing a Great Wall of Comics filled with their favorite trade paperbacks. Some killer local businesses wanted to get in on the mix and will be offering deals to anyone who visits them with a Free Comic Book Day bag. Participants include: 

GRAND RAPIDS

Grand Rapids is pulling out all the stops this year with a full-blown sidewalk festival! No more wringing your hands in agony as you stand in line, waiting for the magic of FCBD to be revealed to you as you cross the threshold. We're teaming up with local friends and partners to bring the experience OUTSIDE this year! Free Comic Book Day merriment will literally be spilling out of our front door and into the streets. Brace yourselves for live entertainment, video game tournaments, button-making, kid's activities, an artists' alley and more. GRAND RAPIDS COSPLAY CONTEST

Showcase your creativity at our Free Comic Book Day Cosplay Contest! Grand prizes will be awarded for the best adults and kids costumes. Kids category judging begins at 1pm, and adults judging begins at 2pm. Your costumed body must be present at the Court of Nerds table right outside our front door during these times to be eligible!

Adults Category

  • 1st place: $200 VoM gift card, 2 VIP passes to Grand Rapids Comic Con, 2 passes to JAFAX, Celebration! Cinema Captain America movies passes
  • 2nd place: $50 VoM gift card and 1 pass to JAFAX
  • 3rd place: $25 VoM gift card and 1 pass to JAFAX

Kids Category

  • 1st place: $50 VoM gift card
  • 2nd place: $25 VoM gift card
  • 3rd place: $10 VoM gift card
